  • This site leads you step-by-step through the process of writing an academic essay in English. It is very clear and simple to use. It will help you understand what is required in an academic essay. There are a number of tasks and exercises to do. Particularly recommended for undergraduate students.

  • academic_writing - yahoo groups
  • This is a really useful resource (particularly for undergraduates). Join the discussion group and you can access writing materials as well as being part of a writing group.

  • Academic Phrasebank University of Manchester
  • This site provides you with guidelines on phrases and expressions useful for writing essays in English in such areas as writing introductions, referring to the literature, being critical, reporting results and more. This site will help you improve your academic writing style.

  • Writing Academic Papers for TESOL School of Education University of Nottingham
  • Created by Ian McGrath and Chen Zehang at the School of Education, this site is designed for international students on Teaching English as Foreign language post-graduate courses. Although it is for a specific group of students you will still find some useful ideas about writing as well as plenty of examples of good practice.

  • Institute of Education The Centre for Academic and Professional Literacies
  • This site is highly recommended. On this very attractive site you can find information on writing reports, critical reviews, reports and dissertations. Not only is the advice extremely useful, you can access a number of tasks, links to other websites, students' views and opinions on writing, and a list of essential printed materials.   • Analytical Writing for Science and Technology by T. M. Georges
  • This site is quite unattractive! Don't be put off, despite the design and look of this website, this is really a very good resource to help you write if you are an engineer or scientist.

  • Central European University Center for Academic Writing
  • If you can't find what you need on this website then you probably can here. This site has a number of interesting links to help students with academic writing.

  • Writer's Web University of Richmond
  • An interesting writing site it covers what you would expect on a writing site (punctuation, grammar, using sources and so on) and it also provides advice on more innovative aspects of writing such as peer editing, brainstorming ideas, building your confidence, writing critically, and effective reading strategies for writing.

  • The Writing Center University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Another site offering advice on academic writing. The advice on the writing process is well worth looking at.

  • Writing Exercises for Engineers and Scientists
  • If you are studying engineering or science this site will benefit your writing. This site contains model writing, advice and exercises for you to do.

  • English for International Students Unit. University of Birmingham Kibbitzers
  • This is a really interesting site. Based on consultations between students and tutors - errors are discussed, students suggest revisions and the final version is negotiated between them. This site shows you a number of student errors, the revisions and real life examples of academic language use. You can also access errors by language group, for example errors made by Turkish, Thai, Chinese, Greek and Japanese students. This is a really useful site.

  • Purdue University's Online Writing Lab
  • Probably the best and most comprehensive on-line resource for academic writing. This site offers everything you need for writing. You can also sign up for email writing tips.

  • Academic Writer
  • This site is organised in nine sections covering all aspects of academic writing. Detailed explanations can be tested by taking on-line quizzes. Very thorough site and highly recommended.

  • University of Toronto Advice on Academic Writing
  • A very comprehensive site that answers students' practical questions about different types of academic writing.

  • University of Toronto Engineering Communication Centre
  • This site is for engineering students. Again, this site should answer most of your questions about writing reports, technical documents, memos, case studies, progress reports, bibliographies and plagiarism.

  • Writing in the Disciplines Web Site
  • This site is designed to help you find your own "academic" voice and help you understand the specific types of language you need in your subject area. The areas covered are; business, science, social science, and humanities. You can also watch short videos of lecturers talking about their subjects and academic language. Very informative site.
